Questions we hear daily
What is the difference between DOT and non-DOT drug testing?
DOT drug testing follows the federally mandated 49 CFR Part 40 protocol — a 5-panel urine test with strict chain-of-custody, MRO review, and specific result reporting. Non-DOT (occupational) drug testing is governed by employer policy and state law, not federal mandate, so panels can be customized (5, 10, or extended), specimen types vary (urine, oral fluid, hair), and procedures are more flexible. Both are appropriate depending on the employee's safety-sensitive status.
What drug panels are available for non-DOT workforce testing?
Vertical Identity offers 5-panel (THC, COC, OPI, AMP, PCP — the DOT panel), 10-panel (adds barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone, methaqualone, propoxyphene), and custom panels including expanded opiates (oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl), synthetic cannabinoids, and hair testing for longer detection windows. Pricing scales with panel complexity.
What is a fitness-for-duty evaluation?
A fitness-for-duty (FFD) evaluation is a clinical assessment used to determine whether an employee can safely perform the essential functions of their job. FFD evaluations may include a physical exam, drug and alcohol testing, mental health screening, and review of any specific medical concerns. Common triggers include extended medical leave, on-the-job injury, observed impairment, or post-incident return to work.
Do non-DOT employers need a written drug testing policy?
Yes — most state laws require a written drug and alcohol testing policy before employers can conduct workforce testing, especially for random or post-accident testing. The policy must specify who is subject to testing, what substances are tested, what consequences apply to positive results, and the procedural protections offered to applicants and employees. Vertical Identity provides policy templates and consultation as part of our occupational testing program.
How much does workforce occupational testing cost?
Drug tests start at $69 (5-panel urine), DOT physicals are $119 flat, and BAT alcohol tests are $59. Custom panels, hair testing, and on-site collection are priced based on volume and configuration. Call (602) 899-1606 to design a program that fits your workforce.
